6 reasons for your child to learn swimming

Swimming is a sport that entails many benefits not just for children, but for everybody. In fact, it is a life skill that anyone will be grateful that they possess. Many parents gave up their children’s swimming lessons because their children do not like it. However, many realised the importance of swimming only when their children are much older. I cannot stress enough the importance of knowing how to swim.

Water Safety

It is extremely crucial that all children know how to swim at a young age. There is water all around us, even when it is as small as a bathtub or a pail of water. Ensuring that your child is comfortable in and around water is essential to their safety. It is one of the biggest reasons to start your child early and NOT let them quit swimming lesson. Your children will be prepared should anything happen in the water.

The prevalence of children obesity is on an upward trend. According to National Health Survey (NHS) statistic, 52.7% of Singaporeans are at moderate or high risk of developing weigh-related health problems such as juvenile diabetes, most of which develop from a young age. Swimming is a great exercise because of the cardiovascular benefits that promote heart and lung health – it is an activity that can be done solo or as a team anytime of the year.  Swimming is known to put less strain on joints and connective tissues as compared to other form of cardiovascular exercise.

Swimming uses every part of the body’s major muscle groups. It is also an effective aerobic activity to get your child’s heart pumping. In addition, it is a low-impact activity that increases flexibility, improves balance and develop better postures. It has always been a sport that is the least likely to cause injuries. These reasons should help assured parents to allow their children to learn this life skill early.

Strength & Co-ordination

Do you recall trying this activity where you pat your head with one hand and rub your tummy with the other at the same time? It takes some focus and co-ordinations to achieve this task. Swimming definitely helps to improve an individual co-ordination and motor skills. One will need to synchronise what one’s arms and legs are doing along with the momentum of breathing and body movements. Constant swimming helps with the co-ordination and strength development for other “out-of-water” situations too.

Confidence & Motivation

With the various activities that are usually conducted during the swimming lessons, one of the popular ones will be this one that involves “call and response”. You will likely hear someone says “Marco!” and the rest will response with “Polo!” cohesively.

Activities such as this will usually bring up the confidence, motivation and even the fun level within the lesson. With such activities, it also helps children to stay focus, listen and response to instructions better.

As the children are able to see how much stronger they are getting base on the distance they are able to swim, they are able to participate in higher level of fun together with their friends.

You can swim for the rest of your life

If your child knows how to swim at a young age, this skill is forever with them. In their later years, their longevity and quality of life will be enhanced with swimming. Water exercising helps to decrease disability and aids in the quality of life in older adults. Since swimming is a low-impact sport, this makes it a safe option for older adults, rather than risking a fall while biking or running. Swimming goes easy on joints and boosts one’s mood at the same time. It is essential that every child learn to swim, especially to be water-safe. But there are so many levels of swimming and benefits that come along the way.

In summary, swimming helps to develop children not only physically but mentally too. This will help to prepare those who are going to national service. It will certainly help to overcome the intensive training they may face.
